The Second Revolution of Moral Fictionalism

چکیده

If our moral beliefs rest on a mistake, as error theorists claim, what should we do with them? According to Richard Joyce’s revolutionary fictionalism, pretend believe propositions in order keep the benefits thinking has for their preference satisfaction. This, he claims, frees theory from radical practical implications. In response, I argue that implementing fictionalism would not preserve practices, but disrupt them. The change belief make-belief yields an unintended second revolution: revolution content of morality. show necessarily relies similar justification practices David Gauthier’s contractarianism, and consequently implications content. Because fictionalists engage purely its instrumental value, they only accept obligations are useful them into fiction. This restriction is important: most fiction departs substantially conventional views. Revolutionary therefore more than it promised be.

The second string (phenomenology) revolution

In the past three years our views on how the standard model of particle physics could be embedded into string theory have dramatically changed. The heterotic string is no longer the only possibility for such an embedding and other perturbative (or non-perturbative) corners of M-theory, like Type I or Type II strings seem now possible. It has also been realized that the string scale Ms is not ne...
